Free Filet Crochet Pattern: Bear

This is the bear square, the next design in my Wildlife Animal Blanket series!

This one feels extra special to me because when I was little, I had a plush bear named Tommie. He was soft, cuddly, and a true companion. So designing this bear in filet crochet brought back so many warm memories.

The stitches are easy and soothing, and it’s such a joy to see the bear shape appear as you work. It makes a wonderful square to add to the blanket, especially alongside the giraffe, lion, elephant, monkey, and koala. Each new design adds its own charm, but this one carries a little piece of my childhood too.

I hope you’ll love making your bear square as much as I loved creating it.

Materials needed for the Bear square

For the bear square, I used Zeeman Royal yarn in a beige/cream shade. Zeeman Royal is a cozy, budget-friendly worsted weight yarn that’s widely available in the Netherlands. Each skein is 100 grams and contains about 241 meters. You’ll need roughly half a skein to complete this square.

I worked the design using a 5.0 mm hook, which gave me a nice balance of stitch definition and softness.
Of course, feel free to use a different yarn if you prefer! Just remember to adjust your hook size to match your chosen yarn.

You’ll also need:

  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations and Pattern Notes

Before we jump into the pattern, here are a few quick notes and stitch abbreviations to keep things simple as you crochet your square.

This pattern is written using US crochet terms.

Stitch Abbreviations:

  • CH = Chain
  • SL ST = Slip Stitch
  • SC = Single Crochet
  • DC = Double Crochet

Pattern Notes:

  • When you see “Chain 3” at the beginning of a row or round, it counts as your first DC stitch.
  • Any stitches shown between { } should be worked into the same stitch or space.

That’s it! Nothing too tricky, but just a few basics to keep in mind while you work your magic with the hook.

Approximate Size

My Bear Square measures about 30 x 30 cm (11.8 x 11.8 inches). It’s the same size as the other animal squares in the Wildlife Animal Blanket series.

Your finished size might be a little different, and that’s totally okay! It all depends on your yarn choice, hook size, and personal tension. If you use a smaller hook or a lighter yarn, your square will turn out a bit smaller. A larger hook or thicker yarn will make it slightly bigger.

Don’t stress about exact measurements! Every handmade square has its own unique charm, and that’s part of what makes your blanket so special.

Instructions Border

To give your Bear Square a nice, finished look, we’ll add a simple single crochet border all the way around. It really helps tidy up the edges and makes joining your squares later on so much easier.

Notes:
– Stitches written between { } are worked into the same stitch or space.
– When you’re done, you should have about 45 single crochet stitches (SC) on each side.

Here’s how to crochet the border:

  1. With the right side facing you, attach your yarn to the top right stitch of your square.
  2. Work 44 SC across the top edge.
  3. In the first corner, work {1 SC, CH 2, 2 SC}.
  4. Continue 42 SC down the left side — alternating 1 SC in each double crochet and {2 SC} in each CH-3 space.
  5. In the second corner, work {1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC}.
  6. Work 43 SC across the bottom edge.
  7. In the third corner, work {1 SC, CH 2, 2 SC}.
  8. Work 43 SC up the right side — alternating 1 SC in each double crochet and {2 SC} in each CH-3 space.
  9. CH 2, then SL ST into the first stitch to complete the fourth corner.

Once your border is finished, fasten off and weave in your ends.
