Leopard | Free Filet Crochet Pattern

Meet the final star of the Wildlife Animal Blanket CAL: the leopard! Bold, elegant, and full of personality. This easy filet crochet square brings the spirit of this beautiful big cat to life with simple stitches and clear, beginner-friendly shaping. Whether you’ve stitched along from the very beginning or you’re joining in for the grand finale, this last square adds the perfect finishing touch to your wildlife-themed blanket.

This leopard square is worked using worsted-weight yarn, giving it a lovely structure and definition while keeping the project quick and satisfying. The filet technique used here is intentionally simple, making it approachable for newer crocheters and relaxing for seasoned makers. Whether you plan to join it with the full collection of animal squares or showcase it on its own, this final CAL pattern is sure to become a standout piece in your handmade creations.

Materials for the Leopard Filet Crochet Pattern

For my Leopard Filet Crochet Pattern, I used Zeeman Royal in a warm beige tone—keeping the same soft, natural palette used throughout the Wildlife Animal Blanket CAL. This medium-weight acrylic yarn is wonderfully smooth, durable, and perfect for filet crochet, giving each stitch a clean, defined look that really brings the leopard’s silhouette to life.

Each skein of Zeeman Royal is 100 grams with approximately 241 meters of yarn, and you’ll need about half a ball to complete the leopard square. One of the reasons I love working with this yarn is how accessible and affordable it is here in the Netherlands, while still offering beautiful stitch clarity for detailed designs like this one.

For the best tension and drape, I paired it with a 5.0 mm crochet hook.

You’ll also need:
– Scissors
– A tapestry needle for weaving in ends

And if Zeeman Royal isn’t in your local shops, no stress! feel free to use any yarn you love for your leopard square. Just choose a hook size that matches your yarn and your personal tension to achieve that crisp and well-defined filet crochet finish.

Finished Measurements

The Leopard Filet Crochet square comes out to roughly 30 x 30 cm (11.8 x 11.8 inches), aligning perfectly with the other motifs in the Wildlife Animal Blanket collection.

Your own measurements may vary slightly based on the yarn and hook you choose, as well as your natural tension. Working with a lighter yarn or a smaller hook will create a more refined and delicate square, while thicker yarn or a larger hook will result in a bolder, slightly larger piece.

Don’t worry too much about achieving the exact same size. What matters most is that you’re happy with the texture, clarity, and overall feel of your stitches. Every leopard square has its own personality. When combined with the other animals, it becomes part of a truly unique, handcrafted blanket full of warmth and character.

Adding the Border

To complete your Leopard Filet Crochet Pattern, we’ll finish with a neat single crochet border. This simple step adds a polished edge to your project and makes joining your squares together much easier later on.

Before you begin, here are a few quick notes:

  • Any stitches written between { } should be worked into the same stitch or space.
  • When finished, you’ll have 45 single crochet (SC) stitches along each side.

Here’s how to crochet the border:

  1. With the right side facing you, attach your yarn to the top right stitch.
  2. Work 44SC across the top edge.
  3. In the first corner, make {1SC, CH2, 2SC}.
  4. Continue down the left side with 42SC, alternating 1SC in each double crochet and {2SC} in each CH-3 space.
  5. In the second corner, make {1SC, CH2, 1SC}.
  6. Work 43SC across the bottom edge.
  7. In the third corner, make {1SC, CH2, 2SC}.
  8. Work 43SC up the right side, alternating 1SC in each double crochet and {2SC} in each CH-3 space.
  9. CH2, then SL ST into the first stitch to complete the fourth corner.

Once your border is finished, fasten off and weave in your ends neatly. Your leopard design will now have a clean, crisp edge. The perfect finishing touch before joining it with the rest of your Wildlife Animal Blanket collection.
