Free filet crochet pattern: Giraffe

This filet crochet giraffe head is a simple, fun and free pattern

Welcome to the first design in my wildlife animal blanket series!
This is the very first square in a special project I’m making for my son. I’m making a handmade blanket filled with wild animals. His room is full of animal-themed decorations, and he absolutely loves anything wild and adventurous. So I wanted to create something that would bring that theme to life.

I’m starting with the giraffe, because it’s not just one of his favorites, it’s mine too. There is something so gentle and graceful about giraffes that I’ve always loved. Designing this square felt like the perfect way to begin the journey.

This filet crochet giraffe head is a simple, fun and free pattern that works great as part of a larger blanket, but it also stands beautifully on its own. You could use it to make a cushion, a wall hanger, or even frame it as nursery art. Whatever fits your space.

Whether you’re making a full wildlife blanket or just love giraffes, this beginner-friendly pattern is a fun way to bring a bit of the wild into your home.

More animal friends will be joining this collection soon, so be sure to keep an eye on the special Wildlife Animal Blanket page for the latest free patterns!

Materials needed

For this giraffe square, I used Zeeman Royal yarn in the beige/cream color. It’s a soft and budget-friendly worsted weight yarn that’s easily available in the Netherlands. A skein is 100 grams and contains approximately 241 meters. I used approximately half a skein for this square.

I worked it up using a 5.0 mm crochet hook, which gave me a nice, soft fabric with good stitch definition.

You can absolutely use a different yarn if you prefer! For example, Stylecraft Special DK is a lovely option in a lighter DK weight. Just keep in mind that if you choose a different yarn type, you’ll also want to adjust your hook size accordingly. The most important thing is to achieve a fabric that lies flat and suits your project.

To complete this project, you’ll also need:

  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends

If you’re planning to join multiple squares into a blanket, using the same yarn weight and hook throughout will help keep everything consistent.

Abbreviations and Pattern Notes

This pattern is written in US terms.

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc =double crochet
  • Chain 3 at beginning of a round counts as first dc stitch.
  • Stitches between {} need to be done in the same stitch/space.

Finished Size

The finished square measures approximately 30 x 30 cm (11.8 x 11.8 inches), making it a lovely, versatile piece that can be used in a variety of ways. For example as part of a larger blanket, a decorative cushion cover, or even framed as a charming piece of wall art.

Please note that the final size may vary depending on the yarn and hook you choose. Using a smaller hook or a different yarn weight will naturally alter the dimensions of your finished square. This gives you the flexibility to customize the project to suit your preferences.
