Unicorn Granny Square | Free Pattern

free crochet pattern: Unicorn Granny Square

Bring a touch of magic to your crochet with the Unicorn Granny Square! A sweet and simple pattern inspired by my daughter’s love for unicorns.

She’s always been drawn to their beauty and soft colors, and this design reflects that charm in a playful granny square. It’s perfect for turning into a dreamy blanket, cushion, or anything that could use a little sparkle and imagination.

Whether you’re crafting a gift or adding whimsy to your space, this square brings just the right amount of enchantment to your project.

Love unicorns? Don’t miss the Free Unicorn filet crochet pattern too. Another fun way to crochet this magical creature in a beautiful openwork style!

Unicorn Granny Square Essentials

To create your unicorn granny square, you’ll need DK (double knit) #3 yarn. I used Stylecraft Special DK in the following colors: White, Cloud Blue, Jade, Lemon, Fondant, Pomegranate, Wisteria, and Black .

You’ll also need a 4.0mm crochet hook, a tapestry needle, and a good pair of scissors to finish off your project.

Abbreviations & Pattern Notes

Before you get started, here are a few important details to help you follow the pattern with ease. This design is written in US crochet terms.

Stitch Abbreviations:

  • CH = chain
  • SL ST = slip stitch
  • SC = single crochet
  • HDC = half double crochet
  • DC = double crochet
  • TR = treble crochet

Notes:

  • Any stitches written between { } should be worked into the same stitch or space.
  • This pattern is worked entirely with the right side facing you. Do not turn your work at the end of each round.
  • The CH3 at the beginning of each round counts as your first double crochet (DC).

Finished size

The completed unicorn granny square measures approximately 17 x 17 cm (6.6 x 6.6 inches).

If you’d like to make a larger square, there are a few easy ways to adjust the size: try using a thicker yarn, a larger crochet hook, or simply add extra rounds to the border until it reaches your desired dimensions. This gives you the flexibility to tailor your square perfectly to your project
