This sweet elephant square is the third design in my Wild Animal Blanket series, and it’s one that’s especially close to my heart. My son adores elephants. His favorite plush toy is named Ollie.
With its big ears and gentle look, the elephant brings a calm, friendly presence to the blanket. Just like the giraffe and lion squares, this one is created using my own free filet crochet pattern, designed to be easy to follow and fun to make.
Whether you’re stitching along to make the full blanket or just picking your favorite animals, I hope this elephant square brings as much joy to your crochet as it did to mine.
You’ll find the pattern below and don’t forget to check the special Wildlife Animal Blanket page to see all the free patterns released so far (and the ones still to come)!
What You Need to Make the Elephant Square
For this elephant square, I used Zeeman Royal yarn in a beige tone. Zeeman Royal is a soft, affordable worsted weight yarn that’s widely available in the Netherlands. Each skein is 100 grams and approximately 241 meters long. I used about half a skein to complete this square.
I worked the design using a 5.0 mm crochet hook, which gave a nice balance between definition and drape.
Feel free to substitute with another yarn if you prefer! Stylecraft Special DK is a wonderful lighter option. Just remember to adjust your hook size accordingly.
You’ll also need:
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
If you’re planning to join multiple animal squares into a blanket, it’s best to use the same yarn weight and hook size throughout. This helps keep your squares consistent in size and makes assembling your blanket much easier.
Abbreviations and Pattern Notes
This pattern is written in US terms.
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- dc =double crochet
- Chain 3 at beginning of a round counts as first dc stitch.
- Stitches between {} need to be done in the same stitch/space.
Final Dimensions
The elephant square measures approximately 30 x 30 cm (11.8 x 11.8 inches), making it a great size for blankets, pillows, or other creative projects. Please note that your finished size may vary depending on the yarn and hook you choose. Using a smaller hook or a lighter yarn will naturally result in a smaller square, giving you flexibility to adjust the design to fit your project.
