Bring a touch of fantasy to your stitches with this free filet crochet pattern featuring a majestic unicorn silhouette. One of my favorite designs and one I’m especially proud of!
Inspired by my daughter’s love for unicorns and all things magical, this pattern holds a special place in my heart. It’s perfect for intermediate crocheters looking to create something elegant and whimsical. Using just simple chains and double crochets, you’ll form a delicate panel with a graceful unicorn at its center. No fancy stitches needed, just a bit of patience and a love for handmade magic.
I’ve long imagined turning this panel into a full blanket by joining multiple unicorn squares together, and that project is finally underway. I think it would make such a magical keepsake.
Whether you frame it as wall art, turn it into a whimsical cushion, or include it in a baby blanket or throw, this unicorn filet square adds a dreamy focal point to any project. I hope it brings as much joy to your crochet journey as it has to mine.
Do you prefer to crochet a granny square? There is also a free Unicorn Granny Square pattern. It’s a fun and whimsical twist on the traditional design, featuring the same magical creature in a colorful, textured style that’s perfect for mixing into blankets, cushions, or any project that could use a little extra sparkle.

What do you need?
To make this project, you’ll need some soft DK (double knit) weight yarn. I used Stylecraft Special DK in the lovely shade Spring Green, which gives the design a fresh, vibrant look.
You’ll also need:
- 4.0 mm crochet hook
- a tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- scissors
Of course, feel free to experiment with different yarns! A worsted weight yarn will also work beautifully. Just remember to adjust your hook size to suit your yarn and tension. Keep in mind that using a different yarn weight or hook size will slightly change the final measurements, but that’s part of the fun of making it your own!
Abbreviations and Pattern Notes
This filet crochet pattern is written using US crochet terms.
Below you’ll find all the abbreviations used throughout the pattern:
- CH = chain
- SL ST= slip stitch
- SC = single crochet
- DC = double crochet
Notes:
- Chain 3 at beginning of a round counts as first dc stitch.
- Any stitches written within { } should be worked into the same stitch or space.
Finished size
The finished piece measures approximately 23 x 27 cm (9 x 10.6 inches). The perfect size for a decorative square or as part of a larger blanket project.
Keep in mind that your final measurements may vary slightly depending on your yarn choice, hook size, and personal tension. Whether your piece turns out a little smaller or slightly larger, it will still capture the same lovely texture and detail of the design

Adding the Border
To give your piece a neat and finished look, we’ll add a simple single crochet border. This final touch helps smooth out the edges and adds a clean frame around your design.
Note:
Stitches written between { } should be worked into the same stitch or space.
With the right side facing you, attach your yarn to the top right corner stitch and work as follows:
- 39SC, then {1SC, CH2, 2SC} for the first corner
- 56 SC down the side
- {2SC, CH2, 1SC} for the second corner
- 38 SC across the bottom
- {1SC, CH2, 2SC} for the third corner
- 58SC up the final side
- CH 2 and SL ST into the first stitch to join. This completes the fourth corner.
Fasten off and weave in your ends carefully. Once finished, you’ll have a beautiful, crisp edge that perfectly frames your crochet design.
