Say hello to the panda!
I’m so excited to share the next addition to my Wildlife Animal Blanket series: the Free Panda Filet Crochet Pattern! This sweet and peaceful design captures the charm of one of the world’s most beloved animals. Perfect for animal lovers and crochet enthusiasts alike, this panda square adds a soft, playful touch to your growing collection of wildlife-inspired designs.
This filet crochet panda square pattern is a fun and relaxing project that combines simple stitches with striking results. Whether you’re making the full Wildlife Animal Blanket or just want to create a stand-alone piece, this pattern is sure to bring a smile to your face.
What You’ll Need
For my Panda Square, I chose Zeeman Royal yarn in the color beige/cream. This yarn is one of my go-to’s: soft, durable, and super affordable. It’s a worsted weight acrylic yarn, great for filet crochet projects like this one.
Each skein is 100 grams (about 241 meters), and I used around half a skein.
If you’re in the Netherlands, you can easily find Zeeman Royal yarn in most Zeeman stores. It’s budget-friendly and comes in so many lovely shades if you want to experiment with colors.
I worked the square using a 5.0 mm crochet hook, which gave the stitches a nice balance of structure and softness.
You’ll also need:
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Of course, feel free to use type of yarn you already have on hand. Just make sure to adjust your hook size to match your yarn and personal tension. Have fun making it your own!
Abbreviations and Pattern Notes
Before you start crocheting your Panda, here’s a quick rundown of the stitches and notes you’ll need. Everything is written using US crochet terms, and the stitches are nice and simple. Perfect for relaxing crochet sessions!
Abbreviations:
- CH = Chain
- SL ST = Slip Stitch
- SC = Single Crochet
- DC = Double Crochet
Pattern Notes:
- When you chain 3 at the beginning of a row or round, it counts as your first double crochet (DC).
- Any stitches shown between { } should be worked into the same stitch or space.
Final Square Size
My Panda Square measures about 30 x 30 cm (11.8 x 11.8 inches), just the right size to fit in beautifully with the rest of the Wildlife Animal Blanket squares.
Your finished size might come out a little different, and that’s totally fine! Factors like yarn choice, hook size, and personal tension all play a part. If you use a smaller hook or lighter yarn, your square will be slightly smaller; a bigger hook or thicker yarn will make it a bit larger.
The key is to find the look and feel you like best. Don’t worry too much about matching exact measurements

Border Instructions – Finishing Your Square
To give your Panda Square a clean, finished look, we’ll add a simple single crochet border all around. This step helps shape the square and makes it easier to join with the other animals in your Wildlife Animal Blanket.
Quick notes:
- Any stitches written between { } are worked into the same stitch or space.
- When you’re done, you’ll have about 45 single crochet stitches (SC) on each side.
Here’s how to crochet the border:
- With the right side facing you, attach your yarn to the top right stitch of your square.
- Work 44 SC across the top edge.
- In the first corner, work {1 SC, CH 2, 2 SC}.
- Continue 42 SC down the left side — alternating 1 SC in each double crochet and {2 SC} in each CH-3 space.
- In the second corner, work {1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC}.
- Work 43 SC across the bottom edge.
- In the third corner, work {1 SC, CH 2, 2 SC}.
- Then work 43 SC up the right side — alternating 1 SC in each double crochet and {2 SC} in each CH-3 space.
- CH 2 and SL ST into the first stitch to finish off the fourth corner.
Once finished, fasten off and weave in your ends. Your panda is ready to join the blanket.
