Free filet crochet pattern: Koala

The koala is the fifth design in my Wildlife Animal Blanket series. I’ve always adored how irresistibly cute and cuddly koalas look, with their round ears and sleepy expressions. This square was inspired by my trip to Australia, where my partner and I had the chance to see these gentle animals up close in their natural habitat. It’s a memory I’ll always treasure, and I wanted to capture a little bit of that magic in yarn.

This filet crochet design is perfect for adding a soft and cozy touch to your Wildlife Animal Blanket, or even as a sweet standalone piece.

Materials & tools for the Koala Square

For this koala square, I used Zeeman Royal yarn. Zeeman Royal is a soft, budget-friendly worsted weight yarn that’s easy to find in the Netherlands. Each skein is 100 grams and approximately 241 meters long. I used about half a skein to complete this square.

I crocheted the square with a 5.0 mm hook.

Of course, you can choose any yarn you like! Stylecraft Special DK is a wonderful lighter alternative. Just remember to adjust your hook size to suit your chosen yarn.

You’ll also need:

  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

If you’re planning to join several animal squares into a blanket, try to stick with the same yarn weight and hook size throughout. This will keep your squares uniform in size and make assembling your Wildlife Animal Blanket much easier.

Abbreviations and Pattern Notes

This pattern is written in US terms.

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc =double crochet
  • Chain 3 at beginning of a round counts as first dc stitch.
  • Stitches between {} need to be done in the same stitch/space.

Finished size of the Koala Square

The koala square measures about 30 x 30 cm (11.8 x 11.8 inches), making it a versatile piece that fits perfectly into your Wildlife Animal Blanket or can be used on its own for cushions, wall hangings, or other creative projects. Keep in mind that your finished size may vary depending on the yarn and hook you choose. Using a smaller hook or lighter yarn will give you a smaller square, while a larger hook or bulkier yarn will create a bigger version. You can easily adjust it to suit your project.
