The Wildlife Animal Blanket has a new member: the Rhino! Strong, calm, and full of character. This gentle giant is the latest addition to the series.
Just like the other squares, I made the rhino in a soft beige color, which keeps the blanket looking warm and cohesive. The simple filet crochet design highlights the rhino’s bold shape and steady presence, a perfect mix of strength and serenity.
Whether you’re adding it to your growing blanket or starting with this square, the rhino is a fun and relaxing project to make. Grab your hook and yarn, and let’s bring this beautiful animal to life!
What You’ll Need
For the Rhino Square, I used Zeeman Royal yarn in a soft beige color, just like the other animals in the Wildlife Animal Blanket series. This yarn is a cozy, durable worsted weight acrylic, perfect for filet crochet projects. Each skein is 100 grams (about 241 meters), and you’ll need around half a skein to complete the square.
Zeeman Royal is a budget-friendly yarn that’s easy to find in the Netherlands, and it works up beautifully with a soft texture and nice stitch definition.
I used a 5.0 mm crochet hook, which gives the square a lovely balance between structure and drape.
You’ll also need:
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Feel free to use any similar worsted weight yarn you already have at home, just remember to adjust your hook size to suit your yarn and tension.
Final Square Size
My Rhino Square measures about 30 x 30 cm (11.8 x 11.8 inches). The same size as the other animal squares in the Wildlife Animal Blanket series.
Your finished size might vary a little depending on your yarn, hook, and personal tension. If you use a smaller hook or lighter yarn, your square will turn out slightly smaller; a larger hook or thicker yarn will make it a bit bigger.
Don’t worry too much about exact measurements, the most important thing is that you’re happy with how your stitches look and how the square feels. Each one has its own personality, and that’s what makes the blanket so special!

Adding the Border
To finish off your Rhino Filet Crochet Pattern (or any of the Wildlife Animal Blanket squares), let’s add a simple single crochet border. This little detail gives your square a beautiful, clean edge and makes it much easier to join later on.
A few quick notes before you start:
- Any stitches written between { } should be worked into the same stitch or space.
- When you’re done, you’ll have 45 single crochet (SC) stitches on each side.
Here’s how to crochet the border:
- With the right side facing you, attach your yarn to the top right stitch.
- Work 44SC across the top edge.
- In the first corner, make {1SC, CH2, 2SC}.
- Continue down the left side with 42SC, alternating 1SC in each double crochet and {2SC} in each CH-3 space.
- In the second corner, make {1SC, CH2, 1SC}.
- Work 43SC across the bottom edge.
- In the third corner, make {1SC, CH2, 2SC}.
- Work 43SC up the right side, again alternating 1SC in each double crochet and {2SC} in each CH-3 space.
- CH2, then SL ST into the first stitch to finish the fourth corner.
Once your border is complete, fasten off and weave in your ends neatly. Your rhino square now has a crisp, finished look and is ready to join the rest of your Wildlife Animal Blanket!
