Rainbow Granny Square | Free Crochet Pattern

Add a splash of color to your crochet projects with this vibrant Rainbow Granny Square free pattern!

Bring a burst of color and joy to your crochet with this cheerful Rainbow Granny Square pattern!

I designed this square as part of the Unicorn and Rainbow blanket I’m making for my daughter. A playful, colorful project inspired by her love for unicorns and my own desire to create something bright and happy.

This rainbow square is a classic design with a fun twist. It’s simple to make, but full of personality. Whether you’re using it to build a vibrant blanket, a playful cushion, or even adding it to clothing, it’s a lovely way to add warmth and color to any project.

I hope it brings as much joy to your hook as it did to mine!

If you love the unicorn theme, be sure to check out my free Unicorn Granny Square pattern as well. Both squares pair perfectly together to create a magical and colorful collection.

Materials

For this cheerful Rainbow Granny Square, you’ll be working with soft, colorful DK (double knit) yarn. Perfect for creating that classic, cozy texture we all love. I used Stylecraft Special DK, one of my favorite yarns for its beautiful color range and smooth finish.

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

  • Yarn: Stylecraft Special DK, 1 ball of each color:
White, Cloud Blue, Jade, Lemon, Fondant, Pomegranate, and Wisteria
  • Hook: 4.0 mm crochet hook
  • Extras: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and a good pair of scissors

Feel free to mix and match your favorite shades to make your square truly unique! The rainbow effect works beautifully in any combination of bright or pastel tones.

Abbreviations & Notes

Before you get started on your Rainbow Granny Square, here’s a quick look at the stitches and notes you’ll need to follow along smoothly. This pattern is written in US crochet terms, and once you get into the rhythm, it’s a relaxing and colorful make!

Abbreviations:

  • CH = chain
  • SL ST = slip stitch
  • SC = single crochet
  • HDC = half double crochet
  • DC = double crochet
  • TC = treble crochet

A few helpful notes before you begin:

  • Stitches written between { } should be worked into the same stitch or space.
  • The square is worked entirely with the right side facing you, so there’s no need to turn your work between rounds.
  • At the start of each round, remember that a chain 3 counts as your first double crochet (DC) stitch.

Finished size

The finished Rainbow Granny Square measures approximately 17 x 17 cm (6.6 x 6.6 inches), making it a lovely size for incorporating into blankets, cushions, or other colorful projects. If you’d like to make your square larger, there are plenty of ways to customize it: try using a thicker yarn, switching to a bigger crochet hook, or adding additional rounds to expand the design. This flexibility allows you to tailor the square to suit your vision perfectly, whether you’re creating a bold centerpiece or a cozy blanket full of cheerful color.
